Presidential Collectibles – Pushing Obama Buttons
When it comes to comes to collecting, buying presidential buttons is one of the easiest ways to start. Buttons (also called pin-backs) are inexpensive, requiring little display space. And they’re truly unique: the history surrounding candidates is appealing to serious hobbyists and everyday people alike. Owning a presidential button means you own an authentic piece of Americana — without spending a fortune.
Interest in starting or expanding a button collection grew when Barak Obama was elected as America’s 44th Commander-In-Chief. Few campaigns have been so unique (contenders in the Democratic primary between a white woman and a black man), and in the general election (a young congressman vs. a long-time senator).
President Obama made history simply by becoming the country’s first black leader. That fact alone heightened interest in owning something to mark this era. His family, background, and interests have created an expanding market for button manufacturers and button buyers. Early pin-backs were snatched by volunteers in Obama campaign headquarters. When both parties held their national conventions, buttons were worn and swapped, making it harder to find free collectibles. Still, treasures are available with a bit of research.
Historically, campaign buttons were tossed into the trash. That’s because wearing a button signified nothing more than party loyalty. But today, collectors demand something different — something artsy, something spelling out a particular message or something with visual portraits. These buttons are so popular that one site supportive of President Obama had to post a message stating, “After giving away 2.2 million Obama buttons, we’re sold out.” The same can be said of companies producing buttons that don’t support the President.
The fact is, most presidential pin-backs made even 50 years aren’t valuable, though a rare Kennedy-Humphrey button is worth between $300 – $500 (outranking many Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt pieces). But as long as you’re wary of reproductions, button-collecting is an affordable and fun pastime. As for President Obama, no one can predict where the value of his buttons will land. But there’s no denying he made history, and whether you want a “Bodybuilders for Obama,” “Cryptozoologists for Obama,” or a square that proclaims, “One voice can change the world – Obama,” chances are you’ll find it. Just remember to buy two buttons when you find one you like — buttons specific to a friend’s interest can make a great gift — and possible collectible, as well.
