Obama Stamps

The historical significance of the United States President Barack Obama’s presidency has not been lost on domestic and international retailers and collectors.  The face of the Nobel Peace Prize recipient can be found on t-shirts, backpacks, dog tags, mugs and just about anything you can imagine.  Even stamps with President Obama donning his signature smile or his thoughtful gaze can be purchased around the world.  For those interested in purchasing or collecting Barack Obama stamps, there are a few things you need to know.

If you’re looking for commemorative President Obama stamps issued by the United States Postal Service (USPS), you won’t find them.  The USPS does not honor living people with stamps, but a commemorative stamp can be issued after an American president has been dead for one year.  You can find, however, an official USPS inauguration commemorative souvenir that includes a stamped envelope with President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden on it.

Also, you can purchase customized President Obama stamps.  These stamps do not depict a picture of President Obama;  however, they celebrate his presidency or inaugeration with United States symbols or President Obama’s words.  These stamps are not designed by the USPS but can be affixed to letters and packages to be mailed.

Other countries and nations have issued official President Barack Obama stamps.  In 2008, Guinea issued a stamp sheet that features President Obama, President Lincoln, and the United States Capitol on a stamp.  The day after President Obama won the 2008 presidential election, Liberia issued an official postage stamp of him.  Chad, Sierra Leone, Grenada, Antigua, Nevis, Bequia, Union Island, Guyana, Gambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo have issued President Obama stamps, too.  Most recently, in order to celebrate International Day of Non-Violence, Papua New Guinea released a stamp sheet with individual stamps of President Obama, Martin Luther King, Jr., Princess Diana, and Gandhi.

You can find  sticker-stamps advertised as collectible or  limited edition Barack Obama and Barack and Michelle Obama stamps.  The first Barack and Michelle Obama sticker-stamps were released prior to the November 2008 election by Obama Stamps, LLC.  Six different styles were released on a sheet of 20 stamps.  These stamps don’t have any postal value because they are stickers.

If you are interested in collecting or purchasing President Obama stamps, you can find them online.  Since President Obama’s presidency is relatively new, being overwhelmed by the number of stamps available to collect isn’t likely.  However, the potential for more stamps to be created and issued is inevitable.
